The Torsion Bar

      The first when the term of torsion bar appears in the world was before the war world two and it was use by the Citroen Company that haze an independent bar and a dead point on the chassis and that gave the birth of the first torsion bar ever to be used. Then its knowledge begins to have more purpose and more use to the vehicle manufactures. The Tatra Company from Czech Republic use it even in the middle of the 30`s.

     The torsion bar is also known as the shock absorber bar or as some tuners used the incorrect term as spring bar, it can be found in the ensemble of every modern car and it belongs to the suspension system and it use is to maintain the center weight of the entire engine.

     It is mounting with a terminal that is attached to the chassis and the other terminal has a handle that is perpendicular mount together with the suspension system and also bound together with axel of the car. So it is understandable that a car without a torsion bar does not have a sustaining point of the engine and all of the weight will be distributed to the springs and shock absorbers. The vertical movement actions on the torsion bar to create a pressure point on the axes of the vehicle and it creates a resistance against movement because the torsion bar have a very important property that it is called rigidity.

     The torsion bar requires some modification when it is used for SUV, GM, etc. The manufacturers change the properties of the torsion bar to increase or to lower the car from the ground depending of its purpose and its possibilities to carry an amount of weight. If you wish to tune your car by given her more height and you decide to do this from the torsion bar, you will see that is very simple. The only thing that you are required to do is to turn the screws, that holds the torsion bar, and you will observe a changing in the position of the torsion bar. That is not a recommendable thing to do because you will modify the properties of the torsion bar and never the less the spring and the shock absorbers will work in a different level by not being positioned to their standards and that result in a over demand from them.

     The elastic properties of the torsion bar are given to us by its length, diameter and the material from witch it was manufactured.
     The sport kits that are on the market today came with the idea of an anti spinning device for the torsion bar and also with some anti shock bracers that keeps the shock absorbers in normal parameters for a correct function.

     The main advantage of a torsion bar is the fact that it haze a very long time of life, it is very easy and simple to adjust the height of the car and does not require the a very big amount of space that makes it more reliable then the springs.

     A disadvantage will be the property to imitate a spring and can not reduce the shock in time and sequentially like the springs do, and it absorbs the shock faster then the springs and gives an impression of rigidity to the car.

     Another main disadvantage is that you want to mount a progressive torsion bar to increase the stability of the springs; the bigger torsion bar can easily break under the pressure because it strength depends a lot of it diameter. In conclusion the bigger the torsion bar is in diameter the bigger the change is to break under the pressure because of the component material that has in it is very breakage.
